Chatty Cafe USA is a social initiative creating simple opportunities for conversation in everyday spaces. We believe that even a brief chat — over coffee, in a library, on a campus, or in a community venue — can help people feel more seen, connected, and part of the world around them. This framing fits the organization’s current public positioning as a conversation-centered initiative rather than a physical café.
Our Story
The Chatty Cafe initiative began in the United Kingdom in 2017, founded by Alex Hoskyn. It grew out of her own experience of social isolation after becoming a new mother and going from a busy work life full of daily interaction to far fewer conversations. While spending time in cafés with her baby, she noticed how many people were sitting alone — or sitting together without much real connection — and began to imagine a simple way to make conversation easier.
That idea became the Chatty Table: a designated table in a social venue where people can choose to sit if they are open to a friendly chat. It is a simple concept, but one with the power to brighten someone’s day, reduce feelings of isolation, and create more welcoming community spaces. The current site already presents this as a simple initiative with meaningful community impact, and that is worth preserving.
A Simple Idea That Grew
What started in the UK has expanded to Australia, the United States and New Zealand. The initiative now has more than 1,000 venues in the United Kingdom, expanded into Australia in 2019, and launched in the United States in the late 2022. That growth shows how universal the need for everyday connection really is.
What We Do in the USA
Chatty Cafe USA works to bring Chatty Tables to cafés, campuses, libraries, community centers, and other welcoming spaces across the country. Our goal is simple: to make it easier for people to start a conversation in places they already go.
We are not a physical café. We are a social initiative that helps venues create small, visible invitations to connect. Sometimes that connection lasts a few minutes. Sometimes it changes the tone of someone’s whole day. Either way, it matters.
Why It Matters
In a world where many people feel disconnected, small moments of conversation can have real value. Chatty Cafe USA exists to help turn ordinary spaces into places where connection feels easier, more natural, and more possible.
We believe conversation does not have to be deep or complicated to matter. A simple chat can remind someone that they are not alone.
